Joint Probability Mass Function Example

This lesson uses an example of the joint probability mass function (joint PMF) of two random variables. We learn about joint probability mass functions (joint PMFs) by exploring these two discrete random variables jointly: number of goals scored by the home team in a football/soccer game, and the number of goals scored by the away/traveling team.

This lesson also showcases how you can use a three-dimensional plot to display the joint distribution of two discrete random variables.

You can view the distribution of two random variables separately (e.g., separately analyzing goals by the home team, and the distribution of goals by the away team separately). However, you uncover more interesting insights by analyzing how these two random variables behave jointly.
